PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. It is an application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to increase academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behaviors, and establish positive school cultures. Positive Behavior Support is a process for teaching students appropriate behavior and providing the supports necessary to sustain that behavior. PBIS is not a curriculum- it is a framework to identify needs, develop strategies, and evaluate practice toward success. Expected behaviors are visible in all areas of the school community. Our expected behaviors are be safe, be responsible, and be respectful. When students display these expected behaviors they will be recognized thus creating a positive school environment that benefits all students, teachers, and families and increases academic performance for all students. When the rules/expectations are followed, students have the opportunity to be recognized for their efforts through a variety of rewards and acknowledgements.
It keeps students in the classrooms instead of having to be removed for discipline.
It uses peer pressure in a positive manner.
It improves the school climate.
It supports the learning environment in order to support high academic performance.
It brings the entire school community together to support the goals of good behavior.
Data is used to make informed decisions about the school.
It focuses on educating all students, even those with challenging behaviors.
It makes it more difficult for a student to misbehave.
Students adopt an attitude of caring and respect for one another.
Schools become safer.
Minor Infraction forms are used to document problem behaviors and re-teach the expectation. Each minor behavior must be documented on a minor infraction form and parent contact must be made. After three (3) minors for the same behavior, the next incident goes on a referral with the three (3) minors attached. Major behaviors are documented on a referral.
Viking Bucks are used to reward expected behaviors and may be used for a variety of rewards.
Viking Bucks can be redeemed by students at the Viking Store opened Mondays & Fridays during all lunch shifts, at dances, and to participate in PBS activities. Teachers can also provide opportunities on their own using Viking bucks. Examples: homework passes, teacher chair, rewards, etc.

BE SAFE: means freedom from harm or danger. Safety consciousness means to be aware of your surroundings, to obey expectations and rules, and to avoid doing risky things that puts yourself or others in danger.
BE RESPONSIBLE: means being accountable for one's actions and fulfilling one's duties. There are lots of different ways to be responsible, such as following through on all your tasks and taking the blame for your own mistakes.
BE RESPECTFUL: means treating others with consideration and kindness and recognizing the value of people, property, and the environment.
Remember: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
